The best plow for a half-ton truck is the WESTERN® HTS, a 7-foot-6 straight blade sized right for a 1500-class pickup and ideal for home use. If you fight drifts or work tight spaces, the WESTERN Enforcer is a V-plow built light enough for a half-ton. Stay at 7-foot-6 and keep the plow under your truck's front axle rating.
Half-ton trucks are the most common plow customer we see, and the most common place people over-buy. You do not need a commercial plow on a half-ton, and putting one there makes the truck plow worse, not better. A 1500 like a Silverado, Sierra, F-150, or Ram 1500 has a front axle rating that caps how much plow it can carry up front. Match the plow to that and you get a truck that clears fast and lasts. Ignore it and you get a sagging nose and lousy traction.
Here's what fits, what to skip, and the two plows we actually put on half-tons.
What a half-ton can carry
The number that matters is your front gross axle weight rating, listed on the door-jamb sticker and in the owner's manual. Plow weight, plus the mount, sits on that front axle. On a half-ton, that keeps you in 7-foot-6 territory and rules out the heavy commercial blades built for three-quarter-ton and up. It's not about whether the plow physically bolts on. It's about whether the truck can carry it and still drive right.
A WESTERN plow isn't GM-only. The plow is the same across makes. What changes is the mount bracket and the wiring, matched to your exact truck. So a half-ton Ford, Ram, GMC, or Chevy can all run the same half-ton plow with the right mount kit. Tell us the year, make, and model and we'll confirm the fit.
Best overall for a half-ton: WESTERN HTS
A 7-foot-6 straight blade purpose-built for half-ton trucks. Light enough that it doesn't overwhelm the front end, simple to run, and it clears a standard driveway in a pass or two. For a homeowner clearing their own place and maybe a neighbor, this is the plow we recommend first and most often.
See the HTS for specs and current pricing.
Best V-plow for a half-ton: WESTERN Enforcer
A V-plow engineered light enough for a half-ton, so you get V and scoop modes without needing a bigger truck. The V breaks through packed banks and drifts a straight blade pushes against; the scoop carries and stacks more. This is the pick if you have tight corners, a long drive, or heavy drifting.

What to avoid on a half-ton
The mistake we talk people out of most is putting a big commercial V-plow on a half-ton because it sounds tougher.
Too much plow drags the front end down, pulls weight off the rear tires, and costs you traction in the exact conditions you bought the plow for. It also wears the truck faster. On a 1500, right-sized beats oversized every time. If you genuinely need a commercial blade, you need a three-quarter-ton or heavier truck to carry it. Our sizing guide covers the jump.

Cost, controls & install
Install. We mount and wire the plow for a flat $1,000, done at any of our six Central Wisconsin locations so it fits your truck and works the first storm.
Controls. Both run from an in-cab control. The straight blade is up, down, and angle. The V-plow adds V and scoop modes, which are easy to pick up in a storm or two.
Moldboard. These come in different materials, poly and steel among them. For a half-ton homeowner it's not a make-or-break call; ask us what's on the shelf and we'll walk through the trade-offs.
Quick questions

How much more is the V-plow?Usually about $1,000 over the comparable straight blade.
